CEREBRAL PALSY FRACTURES

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder affecting movement and muscle coordination. Individuals with CP often have an increased risk of fractures due to factors like reduced bone density, limited mobility, and muscle spasticity. These fractures typically occur in the long bones, such as the femur.

Limited weight-bearing activities can contribute to weaker bones, making them more susceptible to breaks. Spasticity can cause uneven stress on bones, leading to fractures even with minimal trauma. Diagnosing fractures in CP patients can be challenging, as communication difficulties may hinder the expression of pain.

Prevention strategies focus on improving bone health through adequate nutrition, including calcium and vitamin D, and encouraging safe physical activities to enhance bone strength. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in managing spasticity and improving mobility, which can help reduce the risk of falls and subsequent fractures.

Treatment of fractures involves standard orthopedic care, such as casting or surgery, depending on the fracture's severity. Rehabilitation is essential post-fracture to regain mobility and prevent further complications. Collaborative care from a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, therapists, and caregivers, ensures comprehensive management and support for individuals with CP experiencing fractures.
