JOINT REPLACEMENT - TKR, THR

Joint replacement surgeries, specifically Total Knee Replacement (TKR) and Total Hip Replacement (THR), are common procedures to relieve pain and restore function in damaged joints.

Total Knee Replacement (TKR):

TKR is a surgical procedure where the damaged cartilage and bone in the knee joint are replaced with artificial components. It is typically recommended for patients with severe arthritis or knee injuries that cause debilitating pain and impaired movement.

Procedure:

  • The surgeon removes damaged cartilage and bone.
  • Metal and plastic components are implanted to recreate the joint's surface.
  • The artificial joint mimics the knee's natural movement.

Recovery:

  • Physical therapy begins shortly after surgery to regain mobility.
  • Full recovery may take several months.
  • Patients are encouraged to perform exercises to strengthen muscles and improve range of motion.

Total Hip Replacement (THR):

THR involves replacing the hip joint with a prosthesis, often due to arthritis, fractures, or other degenerative conditions.

Procedure:

  • The damaged femoral head is removed and replaced with a metal stem and a ball.
  • The hip socket is fitted with a metal cup, sometimes with a plastic or ceramic liner.
  • This restores smooth joint movement.

Recovery:

  • Early mobilization is crucial, with physical therapy to strengthen hip muscles.
  • Most patients resume normal activities within 6 to 12 weeks.
  • Long-term outcomes are generally excellent, with improved quality of life.

Benefits:

  • Significant pain reduction.
  • Improved joint function and mobility.
  • Enhanced quality of life and ability to perform daily activities.

Risks:

  • Infection, blood clots, and implant loosening.
  • Nerve damage or prosthesis wear over time.

Advances:

Modern techniques and materials have improved the durability and success of joint replacements, with minimally invasive approaches reducing recovery times.

Joint replacements are highly successful procedures that can dramatically improve the quality of life for individuals with severe joint issues. Proper rehabilitation and adherence to medical advice are crucial for optimal outcomes.
