MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a group of genetic disorders characterized by progressive muscle weakness and degeneration. There are several types, each affecting different muscles and having varied onset and progression.

Types:

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD): The most common and severe form, typically affecting boys, with early onset in childhood.

Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD): Similar to DMD but with later onset and slower progression.

Myotonic Dystrophy: Affects adults, causing prolonged muscle contractions.

Facioscapulohumeral MD: Affects facial, shoulder, and upper arm muscles.

Causes:

MD is caused by genetic mutations that interfere with the production of proteins necessary for healthy muscle function. These mutations are usually inherited, but can also occur spontaneously.

Symptoms:

Progressive muscle weakness and wasting.

Difficulty walking, frequent falls, and loss of reflexes.

Muscle cramps and stiffness.

In severe cases, heart and respiratory muscles can be affected.

Diagnosis:

Genetic Testing: To identify specific mutations.

Muscle Biopsy: To examine muscle tissue.

Blood Tests:

  • To measure enzyme levels indicating muscle damage.
  • Electromyography (EMG): To assess electrical activity in muscles.

Treatment:

  • There is no cure, but treatments aim to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
  • Physical Therapy: Maintains muscle strength and flexibility.
  • Occupational Therapy: Helps adapt to daily living challenges.
  • Medications: Corticosteroids can slow muscle degeneration.
  • Surgical Interventions: To address complications like scoliosis.

Advances:

  • Research is ongoing into gene therapy and other treatments to slow or halt disease progression.

Support:

Emotional and psychological support is crucial for patients and families. Support groups and counseling can provide valuable assistance.

Muscular dystrophy presents significant challenges, but with comprehensive care and emerging treatments, individuals with MD can maintain better quality of life and independence.
