STROKE - HEMIPLEGIA

Stroke leading to hemiplegia is a condition where one side of the body becomes paralyzed due to brain damage. This often results from a disruption in blood flow to the brain, either through a blockage (ischemic stroke) or a burst blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

Causes:

  • Ischemic Stroke: Caused by a blood clot blocking a vessel.
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke: Caused by bleeding in or around the brain.
  • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): Often called a mini-stroke, can be a warning sign.

Symptoms:

  • Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body.
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.
  • Vision problems in one or both eyes.
  • Loss of balance and coordination.

Diagnosis:

CT Scan or MRI: To determine the type and location of the stroke.

Blood Tests: To identify risk factors like high cholesterol or blood sugar levels.

Physical Examination: To assess physical and cognitive functions.

Treatment:

Acute Phase:

  • Clot-busting drugs for ischemic strokes.
  • Surgery might be required for hemorrhagic strokes.

Rehabilitation:

  • Physical Therapy: To regain strength and movement.
  • Occupational Therapy: To relearn daily activities.

Speech Therapy:

  • For language and swallowing difficulties.

Rehabilitation Goals:

  • Restore independence in daily activities.
  • Improve physical mobility and strength.
  • Enhance communication skills and cognitive function.
  • Provide psychological support to address emotional challenges.

Prevention:

  • Control high blood pressure and diabetes.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Prognosis:

Recovery varies depending on stroke severity and rehabilitation efforts. Early intervention and consistent therapy are crucial for better outcomes.

Stroke-induced hemiplegia significantly impacts a person’s life, but with comprehensive care and rehabilitation, many individuals can regain a degree of independence and improve their quality of life.
